Sweet creamer replaces more than 40 per cent sugar
FrieslandCampina Kievit is launching a ‘sweet creamer’ concept for application in sweetened instant beverages such as 3-in-1 coffee, milk tea, cappuccino and cocoa drinks. The incorporation of sugar in the creamer as a substitute for glucose syrup is revolutionary. The sweet creamer can replace more than 40 per cent of the sugar in sweetened instant drinks. This not only yields a potential cost saving for customers of more than 30 cents per kg of end product. Because this creamer uses fewer raw materials and there are savings on packaging materials, transport, water and energy consumption, the CO2 footprint can also be reduced by 12 per cent.
Sugar is generally recognised as being difficult to process. FrieslandCampina Kievit has succeeded in adding sweetness as additional functionality to creamers while maintaining excellent powder properties. The standard glucose syrup carrier has been replaced by sugar. This means that customers themselves need to add less sugar to sweetened instant drinks. Depending on the formula, this can yield a saving of more than 40 per cent. The ‘space’ released in the end product offers customers the possibility to further optimise and/or enrich their formula with additional functional ingredients.
Cost savings are high on the agenda for ingredients suppliers and food manufacturers. In addition to reducing ingredients costs, the FrieslandCampina Kievit sweet creamer offers savings in terms of logistics costs, as well as the cost of packaging materials, water and energy. Depending on the formula and the composition of the end product, all this offers the customer a potential saving of more than 30 cent per kg of end product. Bas van Driel, business unit director FrieslandCampina Kievit: “The concept also responds to the importance of more sustainable production and ingredients supply. The CO2 footprint can be driven down by as much as 12 per cent.”
Functionality and health
The naturalness of food and drinks is, along with health, becoming an increasingly important topic for consumers. Customers are responding to this with natural ingredients, additional functional ingredients and lower carbohydrate content. The sweet creamer offers the manufacturers of sweetened instant drinks the possibility to maintain virtually the same strength of sweetness and achieve a calorie reduction of more than 20% - without the use of artificial sweeteners. The sweet creamers are excellent in processing because of their good stability. The first orders were recently delivered.
